Praying for knowledge of His will

We should constantly be discerning His will for our lives and not live on cruise-control as many are used to doing so. Because it is only when we are living out His purposes in our lives that we find the greatest fulfillment on this earth.

I, personally have been seeking to know His will for my life on a daily basis, not so much because I am trying to diligent but because I’m currently in a desert place, seemingly wandering around without sight of a destination. You could be in the same situation or you could just long to obey His calling on your life, whatever the case, it is critical for all believers to discern His will.

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.
Col 1:9 – 12

I was just meditating on this passage recently and God showed me some new stuff, which I feel led to share.

1. Pray unceasingly to know God’s will.

Here Paul says is clearly how he prays without stopping that the Christians in Colosse know the will of God. It speaks about the urgency and importance that they know His will. In the same manner, I believe that we should also be constantly praying to know His will.

2. It is God’s desire to reveal His will to us.

It would not make sense if God did not want to reveal His plans to His children to be constantly praying for it. So it means that God does want to reveal His plans to us and He wants us to pray for it. The verse in Ps 37:4 comes to mind:

Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
Ps 37:4

The more we delight ourselves in God, the more He will tune our hearts to be in-line with His will and desires.

3. God may reveal His will not directly but through wisdom and understanding.

Many times we may be looking for a street sign pointing us towards God’s will, but here it shows us that He may fill us with the knowledge of His will by giving us spiritual wisdom and understanding. We will then need to apply this wisdom and understanding in discerning His will.

4. The correct reason for praying to know His will.

Many of us tend to pray for His will in order that we may be blessed and be successful. However, it says here that we should pray for His will in order that we may “walk in manner worthy of his calling”. We need to have the desire to walk in obedience to His calling. If we are not prepared to go where He is calling us, or to go only to places that are convenient, then don’t be surprised if He does not reveal His will to you. Is your main desire to please Him or to please yourself? We pray for His will so that we can bear fruit in all good works and not for our own selfish benefits.

5. We pray to know His will in order to be empowered.

Why do we need to be empowered? It’s certainly not because it is going to be easy, else we won’t need His power. It says that we will be strengthened with endurance and patience and joy. It implies that there will be challenges and it won’t be easy. Thus we need His empowerment to have endurance and patience with joy. If it was going to be easy, we won’t need joy. Thus we must understand that there is a very strong adversary who is seeking all the time to undermine and prevent the fulfillment of God’s will in our lives. Foolish is the believer who chooses to ignore this enemy. But at the same time, we don’t overly focus on him since he is defeated on the cross, but we must be prepared for the hardship and obstacles that will come our way. Thus we need to pray for his strength and power to overcome.

Having meditated on these few verses, I have taken away some fresh revelation on the posture and position of my spirit when I pray to know His will. I hope that you are encouraged in the same manner and be in a better position to be filled with the knowledge of His will!

About the Author ()

I have been a follower of Christ for more than 20 years now. Started from a Methodist church, then went on to a few charasmatic churches and again back to a Methodist church now. Thus I have experienced and seen a wide flavor of different denominations. Personally, I consider myself non-denominational as I can worship in many different styles. The important thing is that I follow the gospel and love Jesus. I am currently serving as a musician and a worship leader in my church. I believe that my calling is to help others enter into the presence of God through worship. I also enjoy teaching and discipling other believers, which is the main reason why this site was started. I hope to find other believers to join me in this cause to reach out and encourage other believers.
